Car Buying Guide

What to consider when buying a used car

Are you in the market for a new car? Do you question what car you need? The Sales staff at Mooney’s have put this piece together to help relieve your concerns.

What kind of car do you need?

The first thing you need to consider is what you will be using the vehicle for on a day to day bases. If you have a family you may need a 7-seater car, if you’re a business you may need a commercial car.

If your looking for your first car you may be looking for something small and easy to use around town. All of these things need to be considered when purchasing a new car. It’s best to have an idea of what car you would need before you start your search.

There are many ways of paying for your used car, what we recommend is that you pick a budget and stick to it. You may be tempted to buy a vehicle that’s beyond your budget, but we recommend that you stick within the budget you set and begin your search. There is also finance options available.

Call in, view car and test drive

There are many sites online that you can view cars on, we recommend that if you see a car online you arrange a viewing and a test drive. We highly recommend that you do this before committing to any sale.

You may be thinking about the mileage of a car and if it’s too high for the year. Usually a vehicle will drive between 15,000 and 20,000 KM per year. The lower the Kilometres the more the car will tend cost.

Depending on the year of the car your buying you will have to think about National Car Testing service, we recommend that if you’re buying a car and the NCT is out of date that you get the seller to put the car through the NCT test and only when the car has passed then consider purchasing the car. After all you need to have the NCT to drive the car.

Tax will have to be paid on the car, the bigger the engine the more it will cost. You can pay your tax every three, six, nine and 12 months. This is an important factor to consider when purchasing a new vehicle.

Check car history

We also recommend that you check out the cars history to ensure that there’s no hidden problems, was the car stolen? Is there finance owed on the vehicle? Is the car an import? These are all things you will need to know about the car before agreeing to the sale. You can check your cars history on

Petrol or Diesel

You may be thinking, should I go petrol or diesel? You will have to consider a few things, are you driving up and down Ireland? Are you’re going around the city centre? If your using your vehicle for long distance driving, go diesel, if you’re driving around the city, go petrol. Diesel cars will cost more to purchase. If your planning for the future and the car is going to be long lasting, then you may need to consider a hybrid. We recommend that you sit down with a sale person and discuss what’s better for you.
